Social security number not mandatory for EPF services

The Government today made it clear that social security number is not mandatory for getting services from Employees Provident Fund Organisation as the present provident fund membership number will suffice. - Employment rate increases by 0.6% in Jan-March - "Health insurance scheme extended to 6 cr BPL families" - EPFO to maintain 8.5% interest rate in 2009-10 - Satyam to restate its books by the end of March Informing this in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Harish Rawat said a social security number was to be provided to all EPF subscribers under a business re-engineering programme as per an earlier plan. However, this project has been reviewed and a revised project implementation plan has been developed in collaboration with National informatics Centre. This is being implemented since April 2008. Therefore, under the revised strategy "social security number is not mandatory for getting services from EPF as the present provident fund membership number will suffice for obtaining services," he said.
