Sensex gains in early trades

The Sensex opened marginally in red this moning but rebounded almost immediately on positive global cues. - Novartis gains on plans of Alcon buy - Godrej Properties commands 16% premium on debut - F&O OUTLOOK: Nifty to find stiff resistance above 5,300 - FIIs net sellers Rs 51cr in F&O on Monday - Nifty to find stiff resistance above 5,300 - Sensex starts New Year with 20-month high The index opened at 17,556 and touched a high of 17,730. The index is now at 17,698 - up 139 points. The Nifty is now up 46 points at 5,278. US markets advanced on several deals, soaring commodities and a strong manufacturing data. The Dow and the Nasdaq jumped 1.5% each. Asian markets are also in the green. The Hang Seng has added 1.6% to 22,182. Metal stocks have gained in opening trades. Sterlite has jumped 2.3% to Rs 896. Tata Steel and Hindalco have added 1.5% each to Rs 644 and Rs 166, respectively. Jaiprakash Associates has moved up 1.5% at Rs 156. Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors have advanced 1.4% each. Reliance, HDFC, ICICI Bank and DLF are the other gainers in the market today. The BSE market breadth is positive in opening trades. Out of 1,684 stocks traded, 83% have advanced while 15% have declined.
