Bharti, RCom seek telecom corridor via Bangladesh

Indian telecom majors Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications (RCom) have sought to build a fibre optic network in Bangladesh to get connected to the isolated north-eastern states, a report said on Sunday. - New entrants no sweat for existing telecom players - SA Treasury processing MTN application on deal with Bharti - Bharti to launch 3G service by Oct 2010 - Reliance Infratel plans Rs 5,000-crore IPO - RCom prepays term loan worth Rs 5,000 cr - Aircel, RCom in talks for $300-mn infra sharing deal Bharti Airtel and RCom recently submitted a joint proposal to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to connect India’s seven sisters in the north-east, offering Bangladesh access to the alternative submarine cable in exchange, the Daily Star newspaper said. The seven north-eastern states now get telecom services through VSAT (very small aperture terminal) at a high price. A BTRC official confirmed the report and said that as per the proposal, Bangladesh could use the companies’ undersea cable network as an alternative to the lone submarine cable SEA-ME-WE-4.
